Ready, Set, Show: The Ultimate Guide to Your Show Prep Checklist

Horse shows are a great way to showcase your equine partner’s talents and achievements. Whether you are a seasoned competitor or a first-timer, show preparation can be overwhelming. There are so many things to do and remember before you hit the show ring. That is why we have created this  guide to your show prep checklist to help you be well-prepared and make the most out of your show experience.

  1. Vaccinations – A crucial step in show prep is to ensure that your horse’s vaccinations are up-to-date. Not only is this important for your horse’s health, but it is also a requirement by most show organizers. Make an appointment with us  at least a month before your show to review your horse’s vaccination records and administer any necessary vaccines.
  2. Disease Prevention – When your horse is exposed to a new environment, it is more vulnerable to diseases. Therefore, it is important to take preventative measures to protect your horse’s health. Keep stalls clean and disinfected, provide clean feed and water, and avoid sharing equipment and tack with other horses.
  3. A Balanced Diet – A well-nourished horse is a healthy horse. Proper nutrition is essential for your horse’s performance and overall health. Make sure to feed your horse a balanced diet, consisting of good quality hay, grains, and supplements. Avoid feeding your horse before traveling to a show as it can lead to digestive upset and colic.
  4. Grooming – Presentation is key in the show ring, and proper grooming creates a good first impression. A well-groomed horse shows that you give attention to detail and care about their appearance. Get your horse clipped, bathed, and their mane and tail tidied up before you leave for the show.
  5. Equipment Check – Take inventory of your equipment and make sure everything is in good condition. Check that your saddle fits correctly, all straps are tight and secure, and there are no frayed edges or loose stitching. If you are using boots or wraps, make sure they are clean and in good condition too. Finally, don’t forget to pack any necessary equipment, such as a halter and lead rope, spare bridle or girth, and fly spray.

Preparing for a horse show can be daunting, but with a well-planned checklist, you and your horse can be well-prepared to perform their best. Prioritize your horse’s health by ensuring that their vaccinations are up-to-date, taking preventative measures to avoid diseases, feeding them a healthy diet, and grooming them thoroughly. Pay attention to equipment checks to avoid any last-minute mishaps. We hope that you enjoy your show experience and come out victorious in the ring!
